PAT or Portable Appliance Testing is performed to ensure the integrity of each appliance in a business or workplace. Employers and landlords have a duty to maintain safety in these spaces. PAT Testing is one of the ways to make sure appliances and electrical equipment are functioning properly and are not safety risks to their surroundings. PAT essentially has two parts – a visual inspection and an electronic test. Both parts are necessary and fulfilling just one of them may leave out important information.
The visual inspection is carried out thoroughly and completely. At times, a potentially dangerous issue is only evident on the outside, like an exposed wire, for example. The electronic examination is done by passing signals through the appliance’s cable. Appropriate tools are needed for this. And like the first inspection, some problems can only be found on this second test.

After PAT has been done, you will receive a list of all the appliances and equipment that were tested. It will include the results for each item. If there are items that failed or exhibited issues, the list will also include reasons and possibilities. The report will say when each appliance is due for another test.
